Intro - Who am I ? / Information Systems
As part of my college course, I had to complete a semester of mandatory work placement. For a duration of six months, I worked in PricewaterhouseCoopers' (PwC) Auditing department. During this time I worked in their Waterford office, which suited me as I only live a few minutes away by car.
Information systems played a huge role in the work I conducted throughout my placement. PwC have shifted almost all their work online, into a digital format since the breakout of Covid-19. PwC uses various applications and software to complete audit work, some of which were created and developed internally by the firm. I think the most used applications in PwC are, Microsoft Excel, 'Aura', and 'Connect'. I used these applications every single day throughout my 6-month work placement.
Auditors use Excel to analyse and format audit information that will be summarised in a company's audit report. 'Aura' is an internally designed application by PwC, I used it to conduct all audit work from start to finish. This application is vital for an effortless, free-flowing audit. 'Connect' is another software that allowed me to automate my work when interacting with any client. This platform was crucial for communicating with audit clients, and I found it very easy to share information/answer any audit queries using this app.
Without the use of the above applications/software, I would not have been able to complete my audit work.I think that Information Systems are extremely important for Accountants no matter what industry they work in, as it helps to analyse, format, and automate a lot of unnecessary and tedious work. I really do believe all firms not just in the accounting industry should be investing in modern technology, both hardware and software.
My mind tends to fixate on topics if I have recently studied or written about them. Having brought up the topic of Information systems and technological development, I cannot stop thinking about what is to come. What new software and applications will be designed in the coming years?
